Grandchildren -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Archibald Mackinnon was born in 1837 in Portree, Isle Of Skye, Scotland, died on 2 May 1912 in Mildura Vic at age 75, and was buried 5 May1912 in Mildura Vic. General Notes: Archibald McKinnon was born to Donald McKinnon and Mary McLeod at Portree on the Isle of Skye, Scotland on 5th. April, 1837 In 1840, the colony of South Australia was in its infancy, the firts settlers having arrived only 4 years earlier, and there was an urgent need for people of all trades to develop the infrastructure and provide the labour to enable the colony to develop. Scotland was an ideal recruiting ground for a wide variety of labourers, including agricultural labourers, shepherds, bakers, blacksmiths, braziers and tinmen, smiths, shipwrights, boatbuilders, butchers, wheelwrights, sawyers, stonemasons and many others. Discovering the possibility of finding work in the new colony and no doubt affected by the "lean 40's "that made life very challenging for people in Scotland at that time, Donald and Mary set out on their journey to the new land with their young son Archibald. aged 3 years. Accompanying them was a young man( listed on the ship's manifest with the single men) named John mcKinnon. It is not known at this stage whether John and Donald were related, but they could have been brothers. Donald, a farmer, and Mary settled in Clare in the north of South Australia where they leased land (recorded in 1853) and became farmers. Later two more sons were born, Lochlan Alexander in 1842, and John in 1844. The three brothers lived in Clare with their parents and, when old enough, went to work as labourers/shepherds on the large property near Clare called Hill River Station. Archibald continued to live and work in and around Clare until he was about 28 years old and then it seems from records that he moved to NSW where he worked in various roles (contractor, drover) on large properties. One such property was named "Mulara Station", on the banks of the River Darling. He was working on this property at the time of his marriage to Helena Johnson ( a house-maid born in Brighton SA).Their marriage took place at Pooncarrie on 3rd July 1873. Following the birth of their first child, a daughter, Florence Helena, the family moved to Wentworth NSW where their other six children were born. Archibald did not return to Clare to live, but spent the majority of his life in NSW which was a period of approximately 50 years. There appears to have been limited contact with others in his family as time went by. There is no available information to fill out the details of this lengthy period of Archibald's life, but considering the fact, that at his death, as at the time of his marriage, his occupation was listed as "labourer', "contractor", or "drover": it is safe to assume that he followed pursuits such as these during that time. At this time there is only one anecdote available regarding Archibald, and that is that he was a "tall man with distinctly red hair". He must also have spent long periods away from his family following his occupation as a drover, and in fact, at the time of his wife's death in Gawler South Australia in 1909, he was away droving and his location was unknown. In 1912,aged 75 years, Archibald McKinnon died of a heart condition whilst staying at the home of his son Hurtle McKinnon and his wife Myrtle, who lived at Mildura, in Victoria. Post script: There is one puzzle regarding Archibald which until now remains unsolved, and that regards his first born son, Francis George. There is as yet no record found of his birth, However,it is recorded that this little boy died on Hill River Station aged 3 years 10 months (thus born in 1871) of Scarlatina whilst in the care of his grandmother Mary. Although Archibald is recorded as his father, there is no mention of the name of his mother on record of death nor any records of an earlier marriage of Archibald's. Whilst Archibald was a not a man of property or highly educated, it seems certain that his work as a drover was an important contribution to the life of the early colony, for without men such as he, the important work of developing the agricultural potential of the state would not have been realized. Story written by Ruth Warren, Great-granddaughter of Archibald and Helena October 2003 Archibald married Helena (Eleanor) Johnson, daughter of Thomas Johnson and Ann Wheeler, on 3 Jul 1873 in Pooncarie NSW. Helena was born on 20 Mar 1850 in Brighton SA, died on 29 May 1909 in Gawler SA at age 59, and was buried on 30 May 1909 in Willaston SA. General Notes: Helena died of cancer at the age of 59 years, Prior to her death she was living with some younger members of the family at Gawler in SA. At the time of her death, Archibald was absent droving and his whereabouts were unknown. Emily 43, Francis 13, Harrriet 10, Frances 8, Mary Ann 3, Elizabeth Caroline travelled as a domestic servant, aged 20 yrs, also Emily aged 16 yrs. Seemed to be the practise to list older children separately as they were adults. The Shackamaxon sailed from Liverpool on 4th October 1852. It was an American owned ship and sailed in company with the Constane and the Lady Elrington (both bound for Melbourne), the Mary Cannon bound for Calcutta and the ship Indus, bound for Hong-Kong with troops. It carried almost 700 passengers. On the journey nineteen births were recorded and nearly 10% of the passengers, six adults and the rest children, died from Scarlet Fever. There was a Court of Enquiry into the competence of the surgeon-superintendent. Dr Edward D. Allison. It appears that the results were never published. Francis occupation was listed as an Agriculture and Railway Labourer and birth place as Surrey. Most of the immigrants travelled in steerage accomodation, between the upper deck and the cargo hold. Shipowners had found emigrants a new source of profit and had built a flimsy, temporary floor beneath the main deck and on top of the cargo hold.Often it was so far down in the hold that water would seep up through the planking and rats scurried about. Ventilation and light were poor and came only from the hatches when they were open. During a storm, access to the main deck was impossible as hatches were battened down tightly. A storm could last for a few days or up to a week or more but the hatches would stay down. Lights could not be used during the storm because of the danger of fires. Only the wealthy migrants could afford to travel in cabins. Most of the new settlers though stayed in the steerage section of the ship between decks, which were often flooded. The long and uncomfortable trip tried everyone's patience and quarrels and drunkenness were regular. The Kersley family were not wealthy. Harriet lived at Penwortham before her marriage to Alexander McKinnon, her husband Alexander was working as a drover from Hill River Station when they met. They married on 30th September 1862 at St Marks Church, Penwortham via Clare SA. Alexander & Harriet had 14 children. They had 3 boys and 6 girls. Kathleen Marion, Alexander William, Madeline May, Mary, Frederick, Margaret Kersley, CharlotteJean, Linda and John. Prior to his marriage he had a son, Alexander Jnr by Alice Cobb (aboriginal of the Aranda tribe) when 28 yrs old. Mary did not know of Alexander Jnr. until notified by the war department of his death in France during WW1. Following his marriage to Mary, they moved to Charlotte Waters to live. It was there that Mary ran the Govt store and Alexander (Alec) the Govt. Bore. A Mr Keanan noticed that camels had been tied up outside for some time and sent someone to investigate. It was in the store at that time, that an Afghan pulled a knife on Mary, they sold tobacco and he wanted some. Alexander's father and Mary's father both died in 1902. He was a stock dealer when he married Mary Walsh, he sold horses to a Mr Sanford of Mt Dare Station. He was also a Drover with Kidman and away for many months at a time. After they left Charlotte Waters, they lived on properties near water holes out from Oodnadatta. As the water dried up they moved to another.(as quoted in Everylady's Journal). They were living at Alindum station when the children were baptised by the Outback Padre, Rev R.B. Plowman. They were living in a three roomed galvanised iron cottage with sand floors covered with tanned goat skins at the time. see notes from the book written by RB Plowman "The Man from Oodnadatta". The children were again baptised, this time as Catholic when they moved into Oodnadatta after the flu epedemic in 1919. One time Alexander was out shooting and his son Fred decided to play at dressing up as an emu. all of a sudden someone said, "Where's Fred" and they realised that it was him on the hill that Alexander was aiming at. Son, Bill remembers how skilled he was with horses, he saw him break a horse once; he rode it to a standstill and others had been trying and were bucked off. He said it was the best piece of riding he had ever seen. The particular horse was really wild. He thought he was going to be thrown off into the wood heap. Alexander got face cancer in 1919, and lanced it to treat it. It spread & he finally rode his horse to the Inland Mission Station at Oodnadatta to see Dr Flynn (see book Flynn of the Inland) it was too late. He was sent to Pt Augusta hospital & then on to Royal Adelaide Hospital in Adelaide. He wrote to his family from Pt Aug saying how he was looking out from the window at the sea. (The letter cannot be found at this time). It was from there that he was transferred down to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Whilst Alexander was in hospital with face cancer, influenza struck his whole family. They were lucky to be saved. A black fellow came in with the news from Mary that they were all ill. The Sister from the Inland Mission Station at Oodnadatta went out to help & assisted them into a wagonette. The axle broke crossing a creek bed; some of the children were brought in by a station owner's car and the remainder walked in approx. 30 miles. (See book The Man from Oodnadatta). The chest containing opals and other personnel possessions had to be left behind; it has not been recovered. The Royal Adelaide Hospital noted on his death certificate that he had 8 children, with 1 male deceased. It should have read 8 children plus 2 children deceased (Alexander Jnr and John) Information gained in March 2000 shows Alexander James was buried at West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide in an unleased plot, called an ordinary ground plot. There was no entitlement to the family and therefore no headstone. The plot was hence leased to a family called Potter on 27th March 1950 where there are now three bodies buried. He died of face cancer in the Consumptive Home, Hindmarsh Ward, North Terrace, Adelaide, his Death Certificate states "carcinoma face 18 months exhaustion." The eldest daughter Kathleen was with him when he died. He was trying to tell her something, but could not be understood. Medical Notes: Died of face cancer. Death Certificate states "carcinoma face 18 months exhaustion." He died in the Consumptive Home, Hindmarsh Ward, North Terrace, Adelaide, Alexander married Alice Cobb. General Notes: Alice Cobb was an aboriginal from a tribe near Oodnadatta. She fathered a child by Alexander James McKinnon in 1890. She had extra rations from the property and special attention. + 51 M i. Alexander McKinnon Jnr was born in Sep 1890 in Charlotte Waters NT, died on 4 Oct 1917 in Battle Of Paschendale In Belgium During WW1 at age 27, and was buried in 29 The Ypres(Menin Gate)Memorial, Belgium. Alexander next married Mary Walsh, daughter of William John Walsh and Sarah Ann Fincher, on 8 Jul 1902 in Res Of William John Walsh, Hill River, Clare SA. Mary was born on 5 Feb 1881 in Virginia SA, died on 19 Sep 1964 in Adelaide SA at age 83, and was buried on 21 Sep 1964 in Centennial Park Cemetery, Adelaide SA. General Notes: Lived & married at Hill River Station. Moved to Charlotte Waters when she married Alexander. Mary ran the Govt. store and Alexander the Govt. Bores there. She was terrorised by an Afghan wanting tobacco i n the store who was chased off by one of the blacks. Lived in huts near water holes with the children while Alexander was droving. A neibours wife died in childbirth & the father brought the baby over to Mary. She had a new baby herself so breast-fed them both. (See Man from Oodnadatta by Jean Whitla. Mary and the children got influenza in 1918, (see Everylady's Journal 1923, her husband Alexander died of face cancer at the same time and people from Oodnadatta took up a collection and sent Mary & the children to her mothers in Kadina by train. They hadn't seen each other for some time & didn't recognise each other. Mary had baby John at Oodnadatta when she had the flu, he lived 2 days. After moving to Kadina she met & married Sam Stevens who was a miner there. They moved to Adelaide and lived in Carrington Street, Adelaide. She died in 1964. There are many stories we are just learning about as descendants of Alexander James McKinnon and his wife Mary. I hope the following is off interest to others. It was sent to the 'Pioneer Womens Hall of Fame' in Alice Springs and the 'Longreach Hall of Fame' at Longreach Qld in May 2000. Mary WALSH married Alexander McKinnon on 8th July 1902. They moved to Charlotte Waters station in N.T. Mary ran the store there while Alexander was droving for Kidman. She was terrorised by an Afghan wanting tobacco in the store who was chased off by one of the blacks. When the children were born she went with her husband, living in huts and tents near water holes while he was droving, sometimes for months at a time. A neighbours wife died in childbirth and the father brought the baby over to Mary. She herself had a new baby so breast-fed them both (see Man from Oodnadatta by Jean Whitla). Mary had a strong Catholic belief and although the children were all baptized as Protestant by the Inland Missioner (See The Man from Oodnadatta) by R.B. Plowman) she had them all Baptized again as Catholic when they eventually moved to Oodnadatta. The following is an exert from "Everylady's Journal " July 6th 1923. The story of the Oodnadatta family as related from the Australian Inland Missioner, called Does the road wind up the hill all the way? Yes, to the very end." This family had been in the habit of camping on different sights for the sake of obtaining water. When one supply gave out they moved to another. At this time they were camped by a waterhole at the foot of some rocky hills, about thirty miles out from Oodnadatta. Their main building consisted of a large shed made of saplings and leafy boughs In addition there were several tents and in these lived the man, his wife and seven children (the eight was away at the time), with a half caste man and some blacks as assistants, for the father of this large family was in charge of a distant portion of a station, owned by an absentee. Their life was indeed a hard one and to make matters worse the man developed cancer in the cheek. He came to Oodnadatta for treatment and our Sister in charge of the inland mission cared for him, but at length she persuaded him to go south to Adelaide for further treatment and medical care. Just about this time a severe form of influenza broke out in Oodnadatta. The infection came - like most things- on the fortnightly train. The Sister battled bravely against it practically single handed until the Board of Health sent up two nurses from Adelaide to relieve the strain. The Sister was also stricken down with it for a few days. But after a short rest she went back on duty. Shortly afterwards a pathetic note was brought into the township from the mother out at the waterhole saying that she and several of the children were down with influenza. The note, which was sent to a storekeeper, asked that some medicine might be sent out to them. The AIM nurse was consulted and next morning a cart belonging to a Station owner happened to be in the district and was loaded with supplies. In charge of the chauffeur and with a bushman to act as guide, and bearing the AIM nurse with her medicines and her swag, the car started on it's rough trip. For about 15 miles the running was fair, then sand hills were encountered: later on the nature of the country changed and the car ran into a long stretch of gibbers- smooth round stones of various sizes, some no bigger than eggs and some more like a football - and over this rough country the car lunged and bumped on its errand of mercy, and at last pulled up at a place where the point of a hill ran down to the bank of a creek. The passengers walked on round the point and came on the camp. The nurse at once investigated the cases and found that nearly all the family were running temperatures. One boy was very ill and the mother was in a pitiful state from sickness and worry. She gladly handed over control to the nurse and agreed it would be best for all the family to be moved to Oodnadatta. It was too late to start that day so arrangements were made for the driver and his guide to return to the township and the nurse to stay and look after the camp for the night. Next day the whole party at the camp were to start out as early as possible in the waggonette and a relief party would start out from the town to meet them. After the men departed, the nurse made her patients as comfortable as possible and began sorting their clothing and packing it for the journey. She also packed a hamper of food for they had to start out prepared to spend a night on the road. Her own camp-stretcher was spread out under the sky, but she got little rest because of the continual demands for her assistance and the night was bitterly cold. Next morning as swags had to be made up the children dressed and other things attended to then the waggonette, which had seen much service, was loaded up with equipment and the ten travellers. Almost at once a big sandy creek bed had to be crossed. The heavily laden vehicle lumbered down the bank along the bed of the creek and the horses were about to start up the opposite bank when snap went the back axle and the journey was over. There was nothing to do, but to return to camp and await relief. In Oodnadatta preparation had been made. The car was again lent and at length arrived at the camp much to relief and joy of the nurse and patients. It was decided that the car with the nurse, missioner and sickest members if the family would start off at once for the town, while the other members in charge of a half caste man, were to walk toward the town until someone should come to meet them. The car with its load of patients at length reached the township and the influenza cases were handed over to the Board of Health nurses. Then once again the car started out at and by about 8 p.m. all the family was safely in. When the car went back for the last time to meet the party walking in, the driver was touched by the scene he saw. It was dark and the party with several little children in it; weak and ill had walked till they could walk no more. Then they camped on a rise at the side of the track, and each had a little fire going by which to sit. The fires also acted as beacons. The end of the story. The AIM Sister nursed the woman through her illness and saved her life. Her baby boy was born shortly after but died two days later, she called him John. All the other children recovered but just after the crisis was passed and the mother was very low, word came through that the father had died in the south. The local people of Oodnadatta got up a subscription and the whole family was sent south to live. Mary and the children moved back to Kadina with her Mother who she had not seen for many years. Mary eventually moved to Adelaide and died in 1964. On the waggonette were the family treasurers, including a chest which held family personal possessions. This had to be left behind and was never recovered. Much of the family's history would be told, if only we could trace it. Wife of the late Rev Harry Parrott (formerly Keith Uniting Church) Last respects at Brougham Place Uniting Church, North Adelaide SA. Memories from daughter Ruth as follows. Thank you for your kind wishes. We all worked together to have a very meaningful celebration of Mum's long life. She was almost 93 years old and was ready for rest. In the end, she really lost the will to live. However, even up to Christmas she still enjoyed a lively Kris Kringle celebration with all the Adelaide contingent of the family. For the family record, she passed away peacefully at the Helping Hand Centre North Adelaide on Jan 12th. 2006. Her funeral service was held at the Brougham Place Uniting Church on Sat Jan 21st. People came from as far away as Perth, Kalgoorlie,Sydney and Melbourne. She would have loved it. We finished the celebration by releasing 99 lovely pink balloons into the air. It was a wonderful spectacle. Then on Thurs Jan 26th her ashes were laid alongside those of our father Rev Harry Parrott at the Keith cemetery. Love Ruth (daughter) Written by Nancy. "Holidays when I was young" I was born in 1913 at a time when the world was so unsettled ad soon to go to war with Germany. Men were being enlisted to go to the war and women were left alone to bring up their children. No one had much money. Not until I was eight years old, did I ever have a holiday away from my home at Norwood. My father did not go to the war, he had a job but not much money. Transport was by tramcar or by train. Some had horse and cart but not many except in the country. There were very few people who owned cars and they were very rich. When I was eight, I was very ill with Diphtheria as was my mother. My dear dad decided we must have a change. My great uncle at Port Lincoln with a family of five invited us to go there. We travelled on a boat called the "Quorner". It took all night and a morning to do this. I didn't really enjoy this. I was seasick and so was my mother. I'll never forget the heaving up and down. I thought the ship would sink and I hoped it would, to get me out of my misery. The ship didn't sink and we arrived at this lovely beach town on a lovely day. All my troubled feelings were gone. There were five children around our age and I'd never experienced being in a large boisterous family at all. e stayed a month and each day go home very hungry and have a familoy meal of nice roast meat etc. We always, always had some Christmas pudding. If you were lucky and careful as you ate you'd strike with your teeth, a coin (mostly a half penny or a penny or, luck me, a threepence or even a sixpence). Very rarely did I make it but one or two did, and there would be a shilling or a two shilling piece. Then at night we'd make up our own concerts. Our parents (not my Dad because he had to stay at his workplace) would dress up in finery and come like important guests to applaud us. I remember singing something to them. Then at 9 o'clock it was off to bed. I loved this, to be in a room with other children. One day we spent a whole day at a nearby beach and had our lunch on the beach. We ran along the beach and the boys found an old barge close to the shore. It had holes in it but this was lots of fun as some of us got into the boat and bailed out water. We'd get in and out enjoying it all and at last walking home very happy. At last the month was ended and we went home on the "Wandana". My father met us at Pt Adelaide with a horse and trap to take us home. I'd never seen such a ride. The trap had a whip on the side to hurry the horse up if it got too slow. It didn't need to be whipped and he'd clip clop along the road. We were so happy, feeling important as we thought people were admiring us. Our parents did their best to make us happy in the holidays. We'd be taken once in the holidays to see a film at West's pictures theatre in Rundle Street. We saw films for children when Mickey Rooney was then a child and the others who are now dead or very old. Also there was a theatre in King William Street called "The Majestic". Here there were pantimines when the heroine was played by a man. We loved this. Also we took a cottage once at Henley Beach. We loved getting up early running along the beach and paddling in the water. We watched the tide go out and later in the day - come in. We also went once a year to Bridgewater for a picnic with another family. We'd play hidey, explore or sit on rocks in the shallow water of the creek, eating egg sandwiches and picking up flat stones or pebbles to take home. We liked these trips because we went and came back on the steam train. We got so excited to hear the train coming and blowing the whistle, watching the smoke come out in white billows. We also went to church on Sundays, went to Christian Endeavour (which we liked) and then to church and Sunday school. We'd spend three months leaning certain hymns which were bright for the annual SS Aniversary held on two Sundays to record attendances. A man called Stan Whicks used to give Chalk talks-stories illustrated in a clever way by drawing with a chalk on a large screen. I'd go home and used the door of what we a called a W.C. (toilet) with my own chalk and draw our own stories. Later on I learned to play tennis and our Saturdays were always happy, we'd go to the pictures at night. In season, on the weekends, my father would take me for a walk and we'd go where the blackberries were and pick lots and lots for my mother to make into jam. Another way of having a good time was when the Sunday school leaders organised a picnic for us at Kensington Gardens. We'd sometimes go in a large dray pulled along by big horses. We'd alight, run to the creek, take off our shoes and socks, paddle and catch tadpoles. The tadpoles we'd take home in a bottle and feed them grass-hopping the poor things would live. We had no radio in my early life but later on we did. We had no T.V. but spent winter evenings playing games by the wood fire. In the hot summer months we'd often sleep out on the lawn and my father would tell us stories of when he was a boy living close to the River Darling. He'd give us all kinds of yarns and repeat them but never the same. I don't know if they were true or not. Did not have any schooling as he was the eldest boy and needed to work and there was no school in the district. He couldn't read & write but managed to do well. He fell in to a pot of boiling water when a child which had been put down for the blacks. The flannel pajamas he wore took the skin off when they were removed. His father rode the horse to the next station to get Brandy for the shock & they believed that is what saved his life. They thought he would never walk or talk again & was lucky to live. He was 2 months premature and was raised on goats milk and fed with an eyedropper. He was friendly with a black man called Nelson, named as he only had one eye. Nelson would do a back flip of the horse from the recoil of the gun. His son Bob said, his father told him about the lightning storms up North and when it struck a tree the aborigines would then use the wood for spears as it was so hard. He was a good stockman at an early age and was asked to join the Police force because of his knowledge of horses. He went to night school & was going well until someone asked him to write on the blackboard. He was so embarrassed that he never went back. When the family moved down from Oodnadatta after the influenza epidemic, they lived with Mary's mother at Kadina. He also worked in the mines at Wallaroo. He worked on farms for most of his adult life until moving to Adelaide where he worked at Holdens. It was in Adelaide that he met and married his wife Muriel. Madeline May McKinnon was born on 2 Jun 1906 in Oodnadatta NT, died on 7 Nov 1990 in Adelaide SA at age 84, and was buried on 10 Nov 1990 in Centennial Park Cemetery, Adelaide SA. General Notes: Born premature on June 2nd 1906 at Oodnadatta she couldn't open her eyes. She was very sick & had to be carried around on a pillow. She couldn't see properly and Grandma used to have a bag hanging down over the windows till later in the morning. She would call out around about midday and say she could see, and would be told to then come out. They never knew why. She never wore glasses until later in life and would crochet without them. The family endured harsh conditions as part of their upbringing, living near water holes & the father was away for months at a time droving. Influenza struck the family when they were living out of Oodnadatta. The mother was due with baby John (who lived two days) and the father was in Royal Adelaide hospital with face cancer. Mother Mary, saying they were all sick sent a black fellow in with a message for medicine to the Inland Mission station. The Australian Inland Mission sister road out on horseback & they were brought in by wagonette. The axle broke in the first creek bed and some were brought in by a station owner's car the other children walked the 30 miles. At the age of13, Madeline was reported to be so poorly that the teaching sisters thought it was only worthwhile teaching her religion in order that she could make her Holy Communion. They did not expect her to live very long. This explains why Madeline did not have a good education & could not read or write. She went to school when she was 13 at Kadina and was in the class of 5 year olds, she used to faint all the time. Without being able to read any patterns or recipes she was gifted with her hands & could sew, crochet & cook with finesse. Madeline met her husband Jim Cooper while working at a hotel at Ardrossan when 20 years of age. She had three children, a girl and two boys, the eldest boy lived only a few days. Jim died when the children were very young. Ten years later she met and married George Owen Young. He was a boundary rider on the Dingo Fence between S.A. and N.T. It was desolate and lonely. Daughter Margaret remembers teaching her brother Roy school lessons and riding a camel she had there. Later they moved to Peterborough, Yongola and Strathalbyn droving sheep when pastures were very sparse. They drove sheep on the sides of the road to feed them, for station owners. Madeline worked and walked as hard as any man and at the end of the day her feet were covered in blisters. Later they moved to Mt Compass where they were dairying. They moved to the city where in an effort to save enough money for a house, she took in borders and washed dishes at a milk bar called "Segalises" in Rundle Street. Once the money was raised the family moved to their house in Woodville with daughter Margaret, son in law Vic, two children and two borders, named Bernie and Tom. In 1966 George died. Madeline was diagnosed with emphysema but died of a heart attach in 1990. Madeline married James Cooper on 9 Oct 1926 in Wallaroo Mines SA. Maurice Pedler was killed in WW2 on 13th Sep 1942. He was in the 2/12 Australian Infrantry Batallion. Maurice had an epeleptic fit whilst staying overnight at Auntie Lottie's house at 39 Swift Avenue, Dulwich. Barry, Maurice and Colin Simper were all sleeping in the same bedroom and he was not heard during the night. Barry & Maurice had come from Kingston for the football and were on their way over to York Peninsular to their father Bill's farm. He was found next morning. Bill was called and Stan took the message as they were working out in the paddock. He drove the car over the paddock to bring the terrible news. He is buried in the General section Row 510 of the Enfield Cemetery in triple depth. A headstone was paid for and never erected. In April 2000 the remaining family members arranged for the erection of a headstone in his memory. Bob McKinnon and Trudy Sutton (Kaye's daughter) are registered as next of kin. The cause of his death was Prostate Cancer. General Notes: Related by Bob in August 2000. Bob was born at Hamley Bridge in 1943. His Father Bill was working on a farm in the area. The family moved from Hamley Bridge to 'Macs' Beach 7 kls from Ardrossan when Bob was very small. Uncle Perce worked on Hopewells farm there, he decided to leave and move to Mt Compass area on to a dairy farm. Bill and Muriel moved their young family to take his position. They stayed there doing general farm hand work, then moved to a property owned by two men a Mr. Urlwin and a Mr. Bosisto near Dowlingville. Bill went share farming with them tending pigs and milking cows. One of the owners died and Bill had to leave. The remaining partner told Bill years later that if he had known how profitable the farm was he would never have sold it or changed the arrangements. The family moved to Moonta to live with Grandma Willard. Bill worked in the Wallaroo Super works. Ronda and Stan moved to Kingston to live and shortly after Bill and Muriel and family moved also. They lived in a section of the Barooka homestead sharing with Ronda and Stan. Maurice used to ride his bike to the Mt Benson school, Bob was then about four years old and Kaye around 6 months. When Bob started school they moved in to Kingston where Bill Wilkinson laid the foundations for their house in Duncan Street. Stan had a small saw mill out at Barooka and he cut the timber for it, Bill did the laboring and Barry cut down the first tree that gave them the timber for the foundation blocks. Bob started school in Kingston. Work commitments moved them back to York Peninsular where they lived on Lance Whittakers farm near Ardrossan. Bob went to Primary School at Petersville, which was the closest school to where they were living. He used to ride his bike. He went to High school at Maitland where he rode his bike several miles to catch the school bus. He made good friends there who have stayed friends & his best pals during his life. They moved again to Owen where Bill & Muriel bought a house. Bill worked out of town near there. Bob also bought a FJ Holden ute, which was his pride and joy On their fencing jobs together Bob & his father camped sometimes during their work commitments and Bob has spoken of the many tales his Father told him around the campfire. They moved to Owen when Bob finished high school and he started his first job in the railways there. He was going in the navy and he had his papers all signed but it was for 12 years and he thought it was too long and after signing for that time the only way to get out was by dishonorable discharge so he decided against this. He went to the railways at Owen to look for some casual work, Brian Hogg was the porter there and the stationmaster was relieving there at the time, his name was Jack Stuart. Brian had to go in to do his national service training for three months, which you had to do at that time, so he was offered three months work there as it would save them sending anyone up from town to relieve. He went home and told his mother that he had a job in the railways, which she didn't believe, got up the next morning and got dressed, his mother asked him where he was going. He said I'm going to Adelaide for a medical, she still didn't believe him so he showed her the ticket that they had given him the day before for the trip. He was 16.He did a few courses there, Ron Hammond was permanent Stationmaster there, father of the cricketer Jeff Hammond. He did a first aid course while there and then a course to be a guard on the train. While he was doing that he worked in the telephone exchange during the nights, seven nights a week relieving the girls who were not allowed to stay on working during the night, from 10 pm to 7 am. There was a night bell and if it rang they put through the calls and then went back to the bunk to sleep. At the end of 1960 he was offered a job doing the milk run at Ardrossan for Stan and Ronda. He moved over there at the beginning of 1961. Worked on it for 12 months and then leased it from them for the next two years, it was supposed to be until their boys were old enough to do it, but they never got round to it. Bought his own little Morris Minor milk van. Left there and got a job in the highways at Owen, they were doing the Mallala to alaklava road at that stage. Stayed there for three months and then he and his father went scrub clearing and ploughing down at Ki Ki down the South East in 1964. That is where he had his 21st birthday. The work finished so they came back to Owen and went fencing for nearly 12 months. The following year he went to town to work and lived with Auntie Lottie. Managed to get a job with AEI Electrical Company doing local deliveries around the city, cables and electrical fittings and such. During that time he met a fellow called Don Sayers who subcontracted for them. He had put his name down to start carting to Broken Hill for Adams Freight Lines. Brian Hallion was working for FA Stevens at Mile End, so he got a job with them, which paid better money. During that period of time he was working at the East End Market, Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays from 4 to 8 am lugging crates of bananas around with a little motor bike with a tray on the back, running them out to the truck. The bloke he worked for only dealt in bananas. He did that for 4 hours raced upstairs had a wash and went to start his other job. It paid $10 for 12 hours work and it used to pay his board. A job came up with Adams Freight Lines in 1967. Jen got a job in the office there not long after. He carted with them to Broken Hill from early 1967 until October 1968 when he got married, mostly doing three trips a week which meant he was away for 6 nights a week. Carting groceries, cement and general freight. When they got married they went over to Sydney, Canberra then Melbourne for their honeymoon. On the trip over the Hay plains they stopped on the side of the road to put the kettle on, Jen plugged it in and they are still waiting. After they were married he got a job at Cattle Station Creek via Kingston working for Bob Schmook. Doug & Dad were down there fencing, they told him about the job. Bob Schmook his wife Jan, Bob & Jennifer all played tennis for Blackford Tennis Club. Bob used to ride a horse moving cattle with Merv Marwood. During weekends he also carted hay with Brian Hards. Brian and Bob used to make good money even though they worked long and hard hours. Jennifer used to drive the tractor at nights sometimes when they were really busy. They were there from 1968 to 1972. The property owner died in 1971, things were not the same under the direction of his son, but they stayed another 12 months. He had relieved for Koch Transport, where Jen's father worked during his holidays. Bob was offered a permanent job there so they decided to return to Adelaide to live. Peter Rowntree moved them. They moved into their house in Magarey Street as rental until 1974 when they bought it. Jen rang him at work one day to say there was a sign out the front to say the house was for sale and they hadn't been consulted. So they bought it. They lived there for 20 years. Doug was living in Adelaide then and he helped them shift from Magarey St to Brooklyn Terrace. That was in Feb 1972. At the end of 1972, the 29th September, he started working for his brother Barry carting to Darwin in a Leyland Super Hippo carting general freight. There was 800 miles of dirt in those days. He did that until October 1973, when he went working for Deacon Avenue Transport for just on 12 months. He bought his own truck in 1974 and went into business for Sayers Carriers. Bought an Austin truck, which he kept for about three years then he bought a Dodge truck with a pan on it and went carting for Rank a Rena. At the end of 1981 he had a heart attack bought about by stress. The partner he had, got into strife with one of the storeman and it worried him. During the weekends at this time he did furniture removal privately, which supplemented the income a bit as there wasn't a great deal of money in trucks in those days and it's not much different now with what has to be paid for trucks, fuel and upkeep. Anywhere he could go within a weekend, load Friday night and back by Sunday night. He moved Barry & Marcelle to Tumby Bay in 1981 and then to the Prince Albert Hotel in 1985. He had trips to Melbourne, Pt Lincoln, Whyalla. When he had the heart attack he was in the process of buying a new truck, renewed the contract with Rank and bought a new Mitsubishi. Colin Rowntree, a nephew came in with him at that stage and six months later Doug came in with him so they had three trucks working for Rank. They all had a good business and then Rank closed their doors right around Australia in 1983. He went with Astra carting white goods in home deliveries. Doug went on the furniture side and Colin sold out to a guy who used to live at Kingston, who stayed on in the parcel game. It worked out to Bob's advantage as they had more shops and were a lot more involved. At night while working for Astra he did deliveries for Email changing over fridges. Shane would come with him when he had a big fridge to shift. Sometimes they would be likely to roll off the hoist as they had wheels and couldn't be fixed. It was during this time that he bought another little Mazda truck off Astra when they closed down and a little Gemini panel van, which he bought for Shane. Got the two for $3000, should have paid $3000 each so did well. It was just what was owing to them on the books at the time. He made a canopy for it, which could be raised. He had a trailer made at Wasleys by Merv Bonney to put behind it. It depended what loads he had on for the day as to which vehicle he used. At Easter 1988 he sold the big truck to a guy who was working for Phillips. He still did work on weekends shifting furniture, but smaller jobs like flats and units. He stayed there until 1989 when he was offered a job at Adelaide Brighton Cement Company. Harry Grice had worked there for quite a few years and was at him to work there. He started there the week before Easter in 1989 and he spent almost the next 11 years there until he got sick. He signed up for a redundancy package and left there finally in January 2000, when he got a payout. He did a variety of jobs while there and worked his way up to be Leading Hand or Coordinator, as they are now called, on one of the shifts. During his early life he played football for Price at 14 for three years and Maitland High School where he played A grade. From 1960 - 1967 he played football for Owen all except for one year when he had the milk round at Ardrossan. He played there for 12 months but always went back to Owen afterwards so decided to play from then at Owen. Shane was born in Adelaide at Hindmarsh when they were working at Kingston in 1970, Nicole was born at LeFevre Hospital in 1973 and Kerry was born at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 1979. Kerry was born six days after his father died. He always wanted to drive semis since Stan picked up the first semi trailer he bought from George McInnes at Tilley Swamp. It was an ex army semi. When he and his father were fencing, he was asked to drive a semi for Silky Pratt from Owen whilst one of his drivers was recovering from burns. His work involved carting hay up to stations North of Yunta and returning loaded with cattle. While he was doing one of those trips, he left one Tuesday after loading two semi loads of hay into the stock crates, and got back to Adelaide on the Saturday. As he was the youngest they let him go first sending off down the road in case he had any problems. One of the trucks broke down the other side of Yunta and as he was the first to unload he was to go back and bring back the load from the disabled truck. He got back to Gawler and on the by pass road there was a little deli, he stopped for a bottle of coke, two of the Yunta trucks come around the corner. He stopped them at the stop sign, they said he didn't need to go back as a chap called O'Connor was going to bring them back as he had an empty truck. That meant Bob could go home to Owen for the weekend. When he got back, Brian Hallion was waiting for him and said " come on we are going to a 21st party at "Pinery". He said he hadn't been to bed since the Tuesday and he wasn't going anywhere. However he did go and all through a bottle of Coke, he met his future wife Jennifer Martin .He had a bet with Ray Marshman that he would take Jennifer home with him that night. He lost the bet and isn't sure if he paid him, but he did make a date with Jennifer for the next day. Next day he picked up Jen and asked about her girlfriend around the street. They picked her up and then Hallion. Her name was Jennifer also. They both married Jennifers. Lynn and Ray Marshman are GodParents to Shane. Bob's first impression of Jennifer was how beautiful she looked in the red dress she wore, a memory he told us he would never forget. Bob & Jennifer were married at the Port Adelaide Congregational Church on 5th October 1968. Bob died at home on 14th September 2000 after a long illness, cared for by his loving family.
